Even then, I don't care about the "average writer". I want great output. I like to imagine that developers have some self-respect, but by now everyone in the industry is spending hundreds of hours every month reading some of the most poorly written prose we could imagine, simply because it affords us to think less.


How does one know whether they actually learnt physics this way. Seems a lot of reading and structure, that's great. Not convinced about whether there is a change in understanding. Typical university/college classes have assignments, quizzes, exams etc.. don't see the equivalent.


The post explicitly calls out that solution manuals are available and that one should do most/all problems. For highly mathematical topics you can also do derivations (or proofs in math) yourself before reading the one in the book.

They don’t need to “officially support” Rust in order to ship code written with Rust. Just target the applicable architecture and ABI. It’s a lot easier now that the ABI’s are mostly standard now too.

Still it is a matter of sinergy and culture sharing across studios, hence why despite gains achieved by engines like Unity, the huge success made by Minecraft, or Android owning a big chunk of casual mobile games market, most studios end up using C, C++ and the engines that get tier 1 support from platform owners.

The culture in the games industry has always been that IP is what matters, the pain points getting it out there not only are secondary, they are also proudly used at some random GDC talk.


Then why aren't there any public statements about games written in Rust being officially published on consoles? I know that it's technically possible but that does not help you when Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft just say "no" to you because you misuse their toolchains.

If it is this easy, surely the trend is Rust output being an intermediate pass of the LLM super compiler. A security subset if you will (like other kinds of optimization), it will move from Rust specs to some deeper level of analysis and output the final executable. Some brave souls will read the intermediate Rust output (just like people used to read the assembler output from compilers) but the LLM super compiler will just translate a detailed English like spec into final executables.

I'd generally be quite surprised to see LLMs spam unsafe blocks, both because that's behavior that I haven't observed while using them and because that contradicts my mental model of them where they imitate the styles of code that they were trained on (which in rust generally does not include spamming unsafe).

Based on reading https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/record-breaking-nvidia-cuo..., we are honestly pretty similar in terms of technology choices and (verifiable) performance. NVIDIA's found a few new records on VRPTW and pickup-and-delivery problems; but so did we in May and June 2023: https://galgos.inf.puc-rio.br/cvrplib/index.php/en/updates/. We have stopped playing the benchmarketing game, but if PyVRP ran for a few hours I'm sure we could find new records on (some) instances again. And we only need commodity hardware to do that, not beefy GPUs.

The NVIDIA article mentions constant time move evaluations using time warp inside their local search. We use the exact same thing. We used to have a genetic algorithm on top of the local search, like NVIDIA, but recently dropped that in favour of iterated local search, because we found that to be stabler, converge faster, and overall easier to reason about.

I think NVIDIA has a great product, and an even better marketing department.

Not Rust because you won't find anyone to maintain code. Rust is only for rewriting existing code in other language not maintaining it. C++ perhaps because of number of people who already know it, but only for performance sensitive areas. Also, lot of training data. Other than that, usual suspects, Java/C# for enterprise and node/Python for web/DS.

TVs are super famous as the economic example of a good getting cheaper in nominal terms every year as they get better specs. Because it’s such a strange phenomenon. You looking for cheaper real goods, opposed to nominal, misses half (or more) of why TVs are so interesting.

Why don’t you show us some other goods that are cheaper in nominal terms compared to the 90s “because China”?


Basically almost anything electronic? Camera’s, microphones, wireless microphones, battery packs, etc.? Plethora of kids toys all made in china. Most of them are crappy throway, so whether they are really cheaper than the quality toys you can play with for longer…

Then, I noticed that some frozen salmon in our supermarket was mega cheap at €9/kg, as opposed to the more standard €14-16/kg, and the country of origin???? China.
