There's very little of those things in most places.

Chinese and Western models on IP are completely different. In our system, the inventor of a Thing gets a period of exclusive rights and everyone who wants to build off of that Thing has to pay license fees to cover the expenses of the original inventor.

In China, copying a Thing is seen completely different (well, at least as far as I know, so take it with a bit of a grain of salt) - an appreciation that the original inventor of the Thing did something good. Getting copied is a symbol of honor.

Both worldviews are completely valid, but it's obvious IMHO that these two views cannot coexist in one single global capitalist economy framework.

It sort of illustrates the uselessness of the terms. Yogurt is made by sterilizing (likely homogenized) milk and introducing microorganisms that carry out some desired chemical reactions. They produce lactic acid, which is a stabilizer.

Everyone apparently knows that those are good things, so they don't count.

These things exist on a spectrum: kefir has many of similar properties as yogurt but is more 'drinkable'.


That's right. Kefir is essentially a mesophilic yogurt. I don't pretend to understand why but it seems the difference in texture has to do with the different organisms that produce one vs. the other (although the thermophilic bacteria used in yogurt-making -Lactobacilus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus I think- have also been found in kefir; but I don't know if they are very active given the lower temperature).

To be fair, back when I used to make kefir it often came out quite firm to the point that I could lift it out of a bowl with a perforated laddle and eat it with a spoon. What seemed to make the difference was using non-homogenized milk rather than homogenized. Using unhomogenized milk from Jersey cows also seemed to do the trick but the result was a bit too fatty.

You misunderstood I think. They aren't arguing water is a bigger problem than energy. They are arguing that negative perception is mostly focused around water use.

I am saying the paper's scope of analysis (up to 2024) renders it pretty much irrelevant.

No, it's not suspicious at all!

The paper was posted on the 18th of June. I would guess that means they started writing the first draft in the winter of 2026, if not earlier. 2026 data obviously wouldn't be available then, or even now---we're only in September!

In fact, most data products take a few months to compile and distribute. The US will release its Q2 estimate of GDP at the end of September, for example; Statistics Canada is on a pretty similar schedule. Thus, 2025 data might not have been available when they started writing either. It's certainly possible to estimate things on your own, but now you need to show that a) your method of estimating GDP (energy prices, whatever) is valid and b) any effects you see aren't simply due to using different metrics.

In short, it just takes a while to do and write up research.
