On a recent 3k mile cross-country trip I was shocked to see how prevalent Flock cameras were, even in tiny back-woods locations. I'm fairly certain you cannot drive long distances in the US anymore without Flock having a detailed record of your travels.


Not to mention, didn't it recently change to first-to-file as well?

The Taalas chip already had a memory region to keep fine-tune weights.


You should check into hall effect mechanical keyboards. They can have a floating actuation point for retrigger that is based on detecting press, partial release, press. It's really pretty cool.


I mean, they can generally re-sleeve a cylinder. Did no one offer that solution?


They did I believe. I remember getting it fixed and it running for a couple of months after that and then at a certain point the new sleeve I forget what it was called like a Halberg screw or something that they put in also broke and then they weren’t able to do it again.


Funny that you are comparing Copyrights and Trade Secrets. The monopoly granted on Copyright is predicated on it being published. Trade Secrets, by definition, are not published. Copyright is granted based on the value to the public provided by the author publishing their works. Trade Secrets have no such protection as they are not meant for the public good. They have other protection from theft, but once they are published, there is no protection of the information.


Copyright does not depend on publication. In most countries (including the U.S. and those following the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works), copyright arises automatically the moment an original work is fixed in a tangible medium. And there is no actual legal justification for it to be "meant for the public good" in law or policy.

One philosophical justification for copyright is that it encourages creators to produce and eventually share creative works. But the law doesn't ask whether a work provides public value before granting copyright.

You are undermining the argument by including your faulty understanding of law and missing the bigger point. I am not saying copyright and trade secrets are treated the same in terms of protection by law, I am saying they should be. Because as a writer, I do not want to give my life's work away and let people do whatever they want with it. I want it to stay in my family and I should have the legal right to do it. If that means registering a company and using other laws to protect my work, so be it, but it is not meant to be given away for "public good" in my opinion just because its a work of art.


Taalas claims significant cost, speed, and power differential with running on Nvidia (and similar) hardware. Their whole thesis is that with making the hardware cost less, run faster, and run with less power mixed with their claimed fast production cycle for new weights, companies would plan on purchasing and then relegating the other chips to different workloads at the next update cycle. And the chips have facilities for fine-tunes that can by dynamically loaded. The info I've seen has been very light on details, but if they can even get halfway where they are planning, it'll be a massive shift.


Out of curiosity, why do you prefer MySQL over Postgres?


Good question. I think it's because I just rolled into it. It was not really a conscious decision and after a while I got used to its quirks. And it got significantly better over time too of course.


I started on Oracle, then spent many years on MySQL, and am now using mostly Postgres. I vastly prefer Postgres over MySQL. Mind you, I haven't really worked with MySQL in a few years now, so it might have improved a lot for all I know. The one thing that initially drew me to Postgres over MySQL was DDL being transactional.


Yeah I know MySQL started out as the "poor man's" lightweight alternative to Postgres.

But it always worked well for me. Like I said I got used to its quirks. I'm just surprised reading from this article that postgres has quirks too :)
